How VisionQuest Could Complete the Maximoff Trilogy
Five years ago, WandaVision ended with plenty of unanswered questions, but one has lingered ever since: what happened to Vision?
The Vision we had known in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. In WandaVision, Wanda Maximoff’s grief led her to magically create a new version of her partner within the town of Westview. At the same time, Vision’s original body was reconstructed and reactivated without the identity he once had, creating the colorless figure known as White Vision. By the end of the series, White Vision had regained access to Vision’s memories and flown away, leaving both his destination and what those memories now meant for his identity unresolved.
Now, VisionQuest is finally preparing to pick up that thread. Premiering on October 14 on Disney+, the series is the final part of a trilogy that began with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along. As the final chapter of that trilogy, VisionQuest has a much bigger role to play than simply explaining where Vision has been for the past five years.
Across WandaVision and Agatha All Along, questions of identity, memory, grief, and family have become increasingly intertwined. Wanda created the family she and Vision never had the chance to build, including their twin sons: Billy and Tommy Maximoff. Agatha All Along then brought Billy and Tommy back into the story in unexpected ways.
With the Maximoff family scattered, VisionQuest could begin bringing some of them back together. But after everything that has happened to them, what would being a family even mean now?
WandaVision: A Family Born From Grief
At the heart of WandaVision was Wanda’s struggle to process the losses that had accumulated throughout her life, culminating in Vision’s death at the hands of Thanos.
After discovering that Vision had bought a plot of land in Westview where he had hoped they could build a home together, Wanda’s grief overwhelmed her. Her Chaos magic transformed the town into the Hex, a reality-altering spell that trapped Westview and its residents inside an ever-changing sitcom-styled world. Within it, Wanda created the life with Vision that they had never been able to have. They were married, had a home and became parents to twin sons: Billy and Tommy.

As WandaVision progressed, the life Wanda had created began to unravel. Vision realised that something was wrong with Westview and questioned both Wanda and the nature of his own existence. The town’s residents were also trapped within the roles Wanda’s magic had constructed, unable to freely live their own lives. When they finally confronted Wanda, she was forced to recognize the pain her attempt to escape her own grief was causing everyone around her.
Wanda ultimately chose to release Westview from her spell. Bringing down the Hex, however, also meant undoing the magical reality sustaining Vision, Billy and Tommy. Wanda freed the town at the cost of losing her family. Yet WandaVision complicated the question of what had truly been lost.
Outside the Hex, S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Department) had reconstructed Vision’s original body and reactivated him as White Vision, without access to the memories that had previously shaped his identity. When he encountered the Vision created by Wanda, their confrontation eventually became a philosophical debate over the Ship of Theseus: if an object is replaced piece by piece, and its original pieces are later reassembled, which one is the original?
Rather than defeating White Vision, Wanda’s Vision unlocked the memories stored within him. After glimpsing his past with Wanda and the Avengers, White Vision declared, “I am Vision,” and disappeared.
The scene left WandaVision‘s central question of identity unresolved. White Vision may possess the original body and memories, but what makes him Vision? Five years later, that is the question VisionQuest is finally positioned to explore.
Agatha All Along: Billy and Tommy Survived
Three years later, Agatha All Along revisited the aftermath of Wanda’s spell and revealed that her sons had not disappeared with the Hex after all.
Throughout the series, Agatha Harkness is accompanied by a mysterious teenager known only as “Teen”, whose real identity had been magically concealed. He joined Agatha and her newly formed coven on a dangerous journey known as the Witches’ Road, where completing a series of magical trials promised each witch what they desired most. Midway through the series, Teen was revealed to be Billy Maximoff.

As the Hex collapsed at the end of WandaVision, 13-year-old William Kaplan died in a car accident just outside of Westview. At that precise moment, Billy’s soul entered William’s body. When he woke, however, he had no memories of William’s or Billy’s lives. The one connection that remained was an instinctive awareness of Tommy, a twin brother he knew was missing, without understanding why.
Over the following three years, Billy investigated the mystery surrounding Westview and gradually pieced together who he was. He learned about Wanda’s twin sons and realised that his magical powers and unexplained connection to Tommy pointed towards him being Billy Maximoff.
Tommy’s fate remained the missing piece. Agatha helped Billy understand that his brother’s soul survived the Hex too, but unlike Billy, Tommy had no body to inhabit. Later, Agatha guided Billy in using his magic to locate a dying boy and place Tommy’s soul inside him.
By the end of Agatha All Along, both Maximoff twins had therefore survived the destruction of the reality in which they were created, although in new bodies and separated from one another. Not knowing where Tommy was, Billy and the ghost of Agatha set out in search of him. That search provides one of the clearest bridges into VisionQuest. Billy is looking for Tommy, while the new series is set to bring Tommy into Vision’s story.
VisionQuest: In Search of an Identity
The synthezoid at the centre of VisionQuest has access to memories belonging to the character audiences once knew. What remains unclear is how Vision understands those memories, or how much they define who he is now.
Both the official details and trailer for VisionQuest suggest that this uncertainty will play a role in the new series. After escaping those who tried to weaponize him, Vision has been hiding from the world while trying to understand who he is and what purpose he has now. His journey will also bring him into contact with several artificial intelligence personalities, including J.A.R.V.I.S., F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., and Ultron.
Their inclusion extends across different parts of the MCU’s history with artificial intelligence. J.A.R.V.I.S. provided part of the foundation from which Vision was created, while Ultron was responsible for creating the synthetic body that became Vision’s. F.R.I.D.A.Y. succeeded J.A.R.V.I.S. as Tony Stark’s AI, and E.D.I.T.H. was created by Stark for Peter Parker. Bringing these different artificial intelligences into the same story could allow VisionQuest to explore what separates Vision from the technology and programming surrounding his existence.
WandaVision left that identity unresolved. VisionQuest can now move beyond the question of what Vision remembers, and focus instead on how he defines himself in the present. His journey of self-discovery could become less about recovering the Vision who existed before, and more about forging a new identity.
Vision and Tommy: Reuniting Father and Son
One of VisionQuest‘s most significant connections to the wider trilogy could come through Thomas Shepard, the teenager who appears to be the new incarnation of Tommy Maximoff.
Agatha All Along established that Tommy’s soul was placed into the body of another boy. VisionQuest is now set to bring Thomas into Vision’s journey, placing two members of the Maximoff family back in each other’s orbit for the first time since WandaVision.
However, neither is the same as the version the other knew in Westview. Tommy now inhabits the body of Thomas Shepard. Vision has his original reconstructed body and access to memories from his former life, but as we have already seen, exactly how he relates to those memories remains unclear.
That uncertainty raises a much more personal question for VisionQuest: will Vision and Tommy still consider each other father and son?

Vision may know that Tommy is his son without necessarily feeling the connection that the Vision created inside the Hex did. Tommy’s perspective is just as uncertain. We do not yet know what he remembers of Westview, how he understands being Tommy Maximoff or what Vision means to him now.
Their relationship could become one of the most emotional ways for VisionQuest to explore what remains of the Maximoff family. Their reunion may ultimately be about more than recognising each other. It could be about discovering whether, after everything that has changed, they can still find their way back to being father and son.
Where Does Billy Fit?
Tommy’s path may now be crossing with Vision’s, but his brother is still looking for him. It remains unclear if the two brothers will actually meet in this series.
Billy has not been confirmed to appear in VisionQuest, and we know even less about what Tommy remembers of his brother or his life in Westview. A reunion between them could potentially be more complicated than picking up where the twins left off in WandaVision.
Whether they reunite in VisionQuest or elsewhere, Billy’s search for Tommy and their connection to Vision both trace back to the family Wanda created.
What About Wanda?
There is still one major absence hanging over the Maximoff family: Wanda Maximoff herself.
After WandaVision, the Scarlet Witch’s story continued in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where her grief over losing Billy and Tommy drove her to pursue versions of her sons elsewhere in the multiverse. The film ended with Wanda destroying Mount Wundagore while still inside it, leaving her presumed dead.

Her fate, however, has never felt entirely settled. Agatha All Along drew attention to that uncertainty when Billy asked Agatha whether Wanda was really dead, only for Agatha to avoid giving him a straightforward answer.
That ambiguity does not mean Wanda survived, nor does it mean she will appear in VisionQuest. Wanda’s MCU future remains the subject of speculation, including rumors of a possible appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars, but none of that confirms a role for her in VisionQuest.
What we do know is that the family Wanda created remains at the heart of the trilogy. The twins are finding their way back towards one another, while VisionQuest will bring Vision and Tommy back into each other’s lives for the first time since Westview. Even without Wanda physically appearing, some of the relationships and characters VisionQuest will explore remain inseparable from her story.
Wanda’s absence may be just as important as her presence. VisionQuest does not necessarily need to answer if she is alive to bring parts of her family’s story full circle. But as the trilogy she began reaches its final chapter, Wanda may still cast a long shadow over the family she left behind.
Bringing the Maximoff Trilogy Full Circle
For VisionQuest to complete this trilogy, it does not necessarily need a Maximoff family reunion. After everything that has happened since Westview, recreating the family Wanda, Vision, Billy and Tommy once were may not even be the point.
As Vision tries to understand who he is now, VisionQuest could also explore how his place within the Maximoff family fits into that identity. His connection with Tommy may be one part of that journey, while Billy’s search for his brother and Wanda’s unresolved fate leave other parts of the family’s story wide open.
Perhaps coming full circle is not about restoring what was lost in WandaVision, but discovering what can exist after it. The Hex may be gone, but the Maximoff family’s story is far from over.
