Jamie Dornan Cast as Aragorn in ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ – First Details Revealed

The leading cast members have been announced at CinemaCon for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum releasing December 2027.

Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey, Robin Hood) has been cast as Strider (most well known as Aragorn) and takes on the role from Viggo Mortensen who played the character in the original film trilogies. Viggo Mortensen has been rumoured to not be reprising the role for quite a while, alongside the possibility of de-aging him not being a feasible option. Jamie Dornan’s version of Strider will see him in his younger years as he goes on the quest to find the creature Gollum.

Leo Woodall (The White Lotus, One Day) plays the character Halvard, a Dúnedain ranger who will help Strider in his quest for Gollum. He had widely been reported to initially play the role of Strider but it seems now he is one of the Rangers of the North and Woodall is tapped as a costar.

Previously reported by Deadline, Kate Winslet (Titanic, The Reader) has been cast as the role of Marigol, Sméagol’s grandmother as the story explores the early years of the character before his transition into the character that we see in the films.

Even though it has been well known for months [Andy Serkis recently admitted it was an “open secret” — Ed], Sir Ian McKellen will be returning as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo. However, they aren’t the only characters returning, as Lee Pace will return as Thranduil the King of the Woodland Realm and father of Legolas played by Orlando Bloom — who hasn’t been confirmed to be returning yet.
