Galadriel and Celeborn, the tender Tolkien love story you never truly heard about

It’s official Tolkien fans; Celeborn is the newest addition to Amazon’s hit tv show, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power!

Empire Magazine announced this highly anticipated news Wednesday, with a photo featuring Jamie Campbell Bower donning the helm of the aforementioned character alongside Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel. This news comes in advance of the show’s San Diego Comic Con panel on Friday, where a teaser trailer has been confirmed to premier.

In celebration of this announcement, let’s take a quick dive into the unique importance of Celeborn and Galadriel’s partnership; and why it stands out in Tolkien’s vast Legendarium.

I think you can definitely make the case that Galadriel is by nature the “stronger” one, at least when it comes to magical abilities. However, Tolkien literally named her the greatest of the Eldar once Fëanor is gone, so it is an impossible standard to meet. What is true to every version Tolkien has written is that Celeborn is always there to support Galadriel, never taking away the reins and trusting her ability as a leader. Both of them work so well together because they complement each other and because Celeborn is fine with standing in her shadow, as anyone would. But I don’t think that’s a bad thing at all, she has Nenya, was trained by Melian and born under the light of the Two Trees. And yet, such a grand and powerful and wise woman married Celeborn, so he must’ve matched her in his intensity and strength. They work because they focus on different things and therefore cover all aspects of whatever they’re faced with, due to their different abilities.

I could get into the symbolism with Laurelin and Telperion as well, it’s clear Tolkien meant to make that comparison to a certain degree. Both Galadriel and Celeborn managed to take root whenever they went, have always been steadfast supporters for their people, a “light” in the darkness if you will, like the Two Trees have been in Valinor. Galadriel would’ve always been more powerful (not superior) in comparison to anyone in most aspects, it’s all about how it’s handled. And that’s done beautifully in the case of her partnership with Celeborn. And to add to that, this is what’s so lovely about Galadriel and Celeborn as rulers. They are equals, both of them having the same power and responsibilities when it comes to politics / ruling. Where Galadriel is grand and shows strength in her magical abilities, Celeborn is fine with being quieter, negotiating between the different realms in Middle-earth. Both of them complement each other in their ways and it’s evident that it works, as they are literally the longest consistent ruling Elvish couple in Middle-earth.

Celeborn might not be a character a lot of people have on their radar because you unfortunately have to do some reading between the lines, but once you do delve into his character and story, he’s quite the anchor in a world that’s always fighting to survive. Both he and Galadriel stick together, fighting the long defeat (Galadriel’s words!) and even if times and circumstances force them apart for a bit, they always find their way back to each other. Their love is quieter than other love stories in Tolkien are and yet it’s not any less compelling. I hope the show gives their story the chance and care they deserve.

Lord and Lady. Husband and Wife.

In an age where fictional relationships in media are increasingly exacerbating and encouraging unbalanced power dynamics, Celeborn and Galadriel’s beautiful symbiotic relationship feels ever the more important.

Because that is, at its heart, the definition of Celeborn and Galadriel’s relationship. They are two individuals who, like the bee and the flower, only benefit and thrive from working together. It’s mutualism at its finest. There is no parasitic aspect to their relationship. One does not benefit more than the other. They each respect the other’s individual thoughts and actions, and they benefit mutually from the relationship.

An example of this respect lies openly in the lore, when Galadriel respects Celeborn’s wish to stay behind longer in Middle Earth to be with his grandsons, and Celeborn respects Galadriel’s choice to return home to Valinor. They both have their own desires, and despite it taking them in entirely different directions, Celeborn and Galadriel support the other’s choice as a team. Neither of them harm the other; they make this decision together.

Many times, Tolkien emphasizes the Elves’ spiritual monogamy. When two Elves choose to marry, their souls are quite literally bound together. This creates a bond that solidifies the couple as equals in both mind and body. It’s an important aspect of their lore and characterizations, and an aspect Tolkien spent a lot of time on. I’ve always had an admiration for this piece of Elven lore, and thus Celeborn and Galadriel themselves. They are so deeply one with each other in so many ways, while still respecting the other as individuals.

To put it simply, Celeborn and Galadriel are truly equals, and it’s something I can not wait to see the show adapt.
