BREAKING: Jamie Campbell Bower Officially Announced as Celeborn in The Rings of Power Season 3

We have some exciting news released by EMPIRE Magazine today, which has confirmed that Stranger Things star Jamie Campbell Bower will be playing Celeborn in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3.

This news may not be a surprise to many, but it is exciting to finally have confirmation on the heavily theorised role of Celeborn. Jamie Campbell Bower was originally first announced by Fellowship of Fans to be playing a ‘major book Elf’ and then it was later confirmed by Khalil that it would indeed be Celeborn.

But firstly, who is Celeborn?

Celeborn is a Sindarin elf who is the husband of Galadriel and future Lord of Lothlórien. In the books, Celeborn lived in Eregion for a while in The Second Age and took part in The War of the Elves and Sauron, an event season 3 will be depicting. He is most notoriously played by Marton Csokas in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

Comments from the Showrunners and Cast

J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay (showrunners) alongside Morfydd Clark (Galadriel) and Jamie Campbell Bower (Celeborn) have provided some comments on this announcement in the Empire Magazine article.

“This idea of longing and yearning is so pervasive in Tolkien’s relationship with Edith for the time that they were apart,” says Bower. “I really feasted on that idea. Celeborn has had to find a way to survive whilst longing for something that he so dearly loved and so dearly missed as well.”

And Clark was more than game to contribute to the pair’s sparkling interplay. “She’s kind of rude to him in the books,” she chuckles. “She’s the queen! But Jamie looks exactly like how I would imagine Celeborn. He’s such an Elf.”

“He has this voice that is rich and hypnotic and sonorous that feels it has the wisdom of the ages buried inside of it,” says Payne. “And then we did a chemistry read [with Clark], and instantly it just felt like he loved her so much. It felt so natural, and so organic, and so right.”

Galadriel and Celeborn

The newly released image shows an embrace between Celeborn who indeed does have short hair in this specific time period that the image is portraying. Fans have highly theorised that this could be a flashback or even part of Season 3’s prologue cold open similar to season 1 and 2 as mentioned by the showrunners in their AmA with Varking on r/LOTR_on_Prime. Therefore, this could be the couple in a forest in Doriath during the First Age. Interestingly, Celeborn is embracing Galadriel and it seems like he is almost reassuring her whilst Galadriel is looking into his eyes with her hands locked. Could this be an intense scene? Could this be this last time the pair were together, where Celeborn tells Galadriel that he will be going off to fight in the war similar to her brother and leaving her at home? Time will tell with The Rings of Power Season 3 fast approaching on November 11th 2026.
