The Rings of Power Episode 8 Review & Breakdown/ Easter Eggs!

As we reach the finale of The Rings of Power Season 2, it’s clear the show has been building toward some epic moments, and this episode doesn’t disappoint. The battle sequences are visually stunning, with intense action that brings Middle-earth’s conflicts to life. There are some unexpected twists and a few key name drops that hint at deeper lore connections—moments that will leave long-time fans intrigued. It’s a satisfying mix of spectacle, tension, and story revelations, setting up what’s sure to be an even bigger arc ahead.

Shadow and Flame

In a climactic showdown deep beneath Khazad-dûm, King Durin III comes face to face with the ancient terror of the Balrog, a being of “Shadow and Flame,” echoing the episode’s title. The dark, fire-lit chasm mirrors the moment Gandalf fell battling the same malevolent force in *The Fellowship of the Ring*, creating a haunting parallel. As Durin stands his ground, you can feel the weight of Dwarven pride pressing down, with the fate of his people and kingdom hanging in the balance. The intensity of the encounter is as gripping as it is tragic, evoking both dread and awe at the power lurking beneath the Dwarven halls. It also looks like this Balrog has wings too.

Gandalf vs. The Istar

The Istar, whose true identity remains unknown, mentioned to Gandalf that “Manwë promised that you would come,” likely referring to the Istari being sent to Middle-earth by the Valar to assist. The Istar also claimed they were old friends. The nomads mentioned that their people were once great kings, but their downfall came due to a “Dark Wizard,” hinting that the Istar or Dark Wizard might be one of the Blue Wizards.

The Faithful Persecuted

The conflict between the Faithful and the King’s Men has begun, with soldiers arresting Valar worshippers and tearing down homes. They’re now connecting the Faithful and their leader, Míriel, to the return of Sauron.

Anárion Name-Drop & Narsil

Anárion is mentioned by Elendil when he tells Míriel there are still Faithful, including him, on Númenor’s western shores. He later rides off to meet Anárion. Míriel gives Elendil Narsil, the sword that will later be reforged as Andúril, wielded by Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings.

The One Ring Hinted

In a near-death prophecy, Celebrimbor declares, “The Rings of Power shall destroy you, and in the end, I foresee one alone shall prove your utter ruin,” a direct reference to the One Ring. Frodo’s eventual destruction of the One Ring will permanently end Sauron’s return, a nice piece of foreshadowing for both the show and The Lord of the Rings.

Celebanner

A highly anticipated moment occurs when Annatar impales Celebrimbor on a spear. In his final words, “Sauron, the Lord of the Rings,” Celebrimbor dies, his body raised on the spear as a grim display for the oncoming orcs.

A Healed Adar

Adar, revealed in his true Elven form, dons Nenya, which was a thrill to see. However, we learn that his original Elven name was not significant, which debunks many theories about his identity.

Adar’s Death

Sadly, Adar meets his end due to a betrayal by his long-term ally, Glug, who pretends to be injured and then fatally stabs Adar. This betrayal mirrors Sauron’s death from the prologue of Episode 1.

Galadriel vs. Sauron: Round 2

Sauron once again offers Galadriel the chance to join him, using mind tricks that include appearances as Halbrand, Celebrimbor, and even Galadriel herself. She refuses, and the irony of Sauron suggesting she wear a crown while being stabbed by Morgoth’s crown is striking.

The Dwarves Finally Arrive

The Dwarves show up to save the day at the Eregion courtyard, which parallels the lore where a host of Dwarves help Elrond and survivors escape. However, Durin IV’s absence could signal the beginning of Elrond’s distrust of the Dwarves, as seen in The Hobbit.

Durin III’s Brother

We learn that Durin III has a brother, and there may be a power struggle in Khazad-dûm after King Durin III’s death. This revelation suggests that Durin IV might not have been his father’s favored heir.

Míriel’s Possible Marriage

During Poppy’s speech, which intentionally echoes Sam’s from The Two Towers, there’s a brief glimpse of Míriel before Ar-Pharazôn on the throne, with Will Keen’s character reading a scroll. This could be a teaser of Míriel accepting a marriage proposal, as in the lore. Her earlier conversation with Elendil hints she will do anything necessary, even if it means working from the shadows.

Foundation of Rivendell

The final scene of The Rings of Power Episode 8 shows the symbolic founding of Rivendell, with Gil-galad, Elrond, Galadriel, and Arondir addressing the Elves. Despite their struggles, a new age of hope is beginning. Rivendell’s creation signifies a haven for Elves and a commitment to protecting Middle-earth.

Review

The Rings of Power Episode 8 is a compelling conclusion to the season which creates a path towards season 3 and how the free people’s of Middle- earth will now face off against the clear threat of Sauron. The opening scene involving Durin III facing off against the Balrog was epic beyond count and was a moving death. The deaths in this episode hit hard with Adar and Celebrimbor both giving way despite brilliant performances from both Sam Hazeldine and Charles Edwards respectively. Though, there are still some scaling issues where at times the show feels a bit small for example the foundation of Rivendell at the end having not a lot of extras and the Dwarves coming to save the day felt a bit underwhelming. Galadriel surviving that drop despite wearing Nenya was also a bit hard to believe.

Rating 4.5/5

Best performances- Charlie Vickers (Sauron), Morfydd Clark (Galadriel)
